Safe Young Drivers is a book that began as an article appearing in The Washington Post and Pittsburgh Post Gazette in the fall of 1994. It originated in the wake of a terrible and notorious crash involving several teenagers in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

Author Phil Berardelli's intention at the time was to encourage parents to become more actively involved in their teens' instruction.

This book is an indispensable guide for teaching teens to drive. Written by Phil Berardelli, a father and former teacher who understands this often frustrating - and potentially dangerous - passage into adulthood, Safe Young Drivers is intended for parents and teens to use together. Each new lesson addresses parental issues such as "How do I choose a car for my teen?" and provides teens with simple instruction and important tips to remember.

With simple graphics, a complete index, and "Some ABC's for the Road," - a mini-encyclopedia for teens - Safe Young Drivers offers a valuable tool for all new drivers and their teachers.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Official Website

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is funded by auto industry giants and has driver safety as a major focus of its misson statement.

Armed with information garnered from insurance claims, crash testing and other data, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Official Website is in a unique position to offer insight on what causes teen accidents — and how to not only prevent accidents, but reduce their resulting injuries.

One important topic this publication explores is vehicle selection. The “affordable” vehicle you let your teen may be driving, is likely not the safest in an accident.

  • In the year 2000, 8,155 15- to 20-year-old drivers were involved in fatal crashes.
  • The fatality rate for teenage drivers based on estimated annual travel, is about 4 times as high as the rate for drivers 25 through 69 years old.
